For recording the audio we had two sessions, and for the video, we had four sessions to record. Our idea changed slightly, as
firstly we were going to have a split screen, where one side of the frame was
time lapses and the other side was close-ups. We
then changed our idea again to have film grain, where the film grain increased as the film went on. This was
to give a sense of time passing in a park. However both of these ideas looked amateurish
and we remove them.
The only production problem we had
was that on our third video recording session we were going to get night shots,
but it got dark quickly and there was a lot of
grain. We had to go and rerecord the shots when it was lighter.
Our team work was great through the project. We always organized when we were going to meet up again next, and we finished the project well ahead of the deadline. We worked together the whole way through the project to make sure we were both happy. We planned well as a team and were always conscious of the time we had left to finish the project. Weakness' of my team working skills is I’m anxious to finish projects, so I can appear pushy to the other members. I think to improve this I should take a step back as the project doesn’t need to be finished until the deadline. Another issue is that sometimes I can get offended when someone else in a group has a better idea or does it different to me. I have learnt that it’s a group project and people will have alternate ideas.
There are many strengths of the project. The idea to go from morning to night is unique. Also, the sounds are really crisp and it's easy as an audience to immerse yourself in the environment. I'm also really proud of the range of sounds we managed to collect. Also the shots look brilliant and thoroughly capture the natural beauty. We tried to use inspiration from (Flight 2006) as this piece perfectly takes a simple surrounding and makes it visually compelling. I also really like how peaceful the video looks, and how energetic the audio is. They both complement each other in a special way.
Some negatives of the project is that it could be seen as a glorified slideshow. This was due to our idea, which made it difficult to do something interesting with the narrative. In an attempt to add more of a narrative we tried to have split screens, and film grain. However they didn't look good when editing. From an audience’s perspective, it’s fairly simple and people may lose interest towards the end. If we were going to change it, we would use a wide range of shots, such as aerial shots, tilt shots and zooms. This would make it most interesting. What was surprising when we received comments from an audience was some people commented they couldn’t tell where the morning stopped and the afternoon started. They also felt the transition from afternoon to night-time was too drastic. If we going to change it again we would get some more late afternoon shots so the change of light was more gradual.
I have learnt how to use the Zoom H4N and Audio Technical AT8015, and I would be confident using them in another project. I now have a larger appreciation for audio in film as it really brings the piece alive. I have also learnt I have a hidden passion for experimental film, I didn’t think I was going to enjoy this project as much as I did.
