Sync Sound

During the sync sound session I learnt that it’s easier to use the XF100 with the AT8015 mic to record sync sound for documentary instead of using the Zoom H4N because it would be too difficult to edit the sound during post production because of the amount of footage which will be recorded. It makes it easier to have the sound already synced up with the video.
I didn’t know how to record sound using the XF100 and the AT8015, and during the session on 2/2/16 I now know how to do this.

Once the AT8015 is plugged in to Channel 1 on the XF100, the settings on the XF100 need to be set to:

  • Channel 1 – So the XF100 is recording from the shotgun mic
  • Manual - so you can control the input volume
  • +48V - because the Shotgun mic requires phantom power from the camera to work
  • External – so the XF100 records from the external Shotgun mic and not the internal microphone

We then learnt how to use the boom pole. Which connects to the mic at the bottom of the handle. We learnt how to wrap the XLR cable around the boom pole, and that it’s important to keep it tight so the mic doesn’t pick up rattling from the cable. We were taught that the best position is to hold the boom pole above the interviewee so that it picks up the best sound possible:

and to hold the boom hole with two hands so that it doesn’t get uncomfortable for the sound recordist:

I took a photo of the setup for the interview:
