Evaluation

I am very happy with the final outcome. I was hugely disappointed with the first edit by Josh, but after re-editing it turned out exactly how I had imagined. For an audience, I think we keep their interest throughout. We did this by purposely using a large amount of cutaway shots and keeping the interviewee’s answers down to a minimum. The largest positive is the interviewee’s are very passionate and interesting to listen to, we also got three interviews at three different locations which gave us a substantial amount of answers and cutaway shots to work with. I am very happy with the framing of my shots and the microphone quality. Some negative were that the shops we shot in had no room for lighting; preferably we would have created a three light setup to get a more pleasing shot. Also there was no room for boom pole so we couldn’t get as close as we wanted with the microphone. Lastly customers consistently came in to the shop during the interviewers, which distracted the interviewer, and affected the sound recordings. If I was to redo the project I would make sure we could get an interviewer with a younger collector to get their perspective on the vinyl resurgence.

My original role was the cinematographer, but at the end of the project I also became the editor. As a group we approached three vinyl shops. After, I compiled a shot list and the producer arranged for us to film there. I booked out the equipment throughout the project. We filmed interviews at two of these locations, but the other one didn't work out because they were moving shops the week we wanted to film. The producer managed to make contact with an older collector who we were able to interview, we wanted to interview him next to his collection but because his flat is small he admitted it wasn't best to film him there. We managed to get in contact with a bar close to his house, and they allowed us to film the interview there because they knew him. We also planned on interviewing a younger collector to get their perspective, however he wasn't able to commit to the project. My main contribution was shooting each interview and all cutaway shots of the locations. The original edit was disappointing, as the editor didn't give himself enough time. I started a new edit, working with the director, and this time it was more like we visualized.

This was the first project I had used the Canon XF100. I spent a while learning the controls of the camera, and I have gained confidence in using it. I taught myself how to setup a Konova K5 slider as well. This was my first time as editor on a project too. Initially I was reluctant using Avid as I was unfamiliar with it, but after editing this project I have gained confidence and would work with it again. Creatively I spent some time creating the opening title shot which features the title 'The Collectors' key framed onto the vinyl sleeve.

Initially we worked well as a team. We communicated well and had regular group meetings. However towards the end of the project we lost contact with Nathan for a week, and Josh left the edit too late and it was not what we wanted. Phil and me worked the best together and ended up re-editing the documentary between us. My strengths as a team member would be I am very conscious of time and like to get the work done quickly so nobody is waiting for me. I would say I’m a very committed team member and I’m always up for helping. The negatives of my team working skills would be that I tend to rush things because I’m conscious of time, I need to learn how to relax and not stress. I also like to do things myself and I would like to learn how to put my trust in other members.
