The main theme of Sign Language is love, as well as concurring your fears. Our main character doesn’t have courage to tell this girl how he feels. The film represents this everyday struggle people feel.
The approach by Oscar Sharp is a ‘mockumentary’, where it’s presented like a documentary, but it’s totally fictional. This approach worked really well and I enjoyed it. Presenting it like a documentary made it look real, which in itself made it more of a joke because the subject and idea is so ridiculous. Also having the main character present it like it’s a documentary helps the audience suspend our disbelief on the silly story, and allows the audience to connect more with the character, and imagine what it would be like to be him standing on the street with this boring job.
The stylistic choice of repeating shots relates to it’s content because you can imagine holding a sign everyday would get very tedious. The use of a deep focus on the character showed to the audience how the job makes him feel alone and the fact all we hear is his dialogue shows to us that it makes him feel lonely.
Overall I found this film really funny and the documentary style really added to the hilarity.
